Hadiqa Kiani: Boohey Barian singer

Hadiqa Kiani (born 11 August 1972) is a Pakistani singer, songwriter and actress from Rawalpindi, one of the defining female voices of Pakistani pop, famed for Boohey Barian, Dupatta and Janan. Trained in classical music in Lahore, she broke through as the first woman of her generation to front a pop album, sang in Punjabi, Urdu, Pashto and English, and later moved into acclaimed television acting.

A poet's daughter in Rawalpindi

She was born in Rawalpindi, the youngest of three children in a Gakhar family. Her father died when she was three, and her mother, Khawar Kiani, a poet and the principal of a government girls' school, spotted her ability and enrolled her at the Pakistan National Council of the Arts, where Nargis Naheed gave her early training. As a schoolgirl at Viqar-un-Nisa Noon Girls High School she represented Pakistan at international children's festivals in Turkey, Jordan, Bulgaria and Greece, and sang on Sohail Rana's PTV children's programme Rang Barangi Dunya. In the eighth grade the family moved to Lahore, where she trained classically under Ustad Faiz Ahmed Khan and Wajid Ali Nashad, and took a bachelor's degree in psychology from Kinnaird College and a master's from Government College University.

A thousand songs for children, then Raaz

In the early 1990s she hosted the children's music programme Angan Angan Taray for over three years, singing more than a thousand songs for it, and PTV gave her its A+ artist title alongside names like Noor Jehan. Her debut album Raaz arrived in 1996. Educated women from non-musical families did not release pop albums in Pakistan then, and she was the first female singer to do so since Nazia Hassan stepped away. In January 1997 she became the first Asian singer to perform on the British National Lottery Live on BBC One, toured fifteen American states, and sang at the Royal Albert Hall in London and the Kennedy Center in Washington in the years that followed.

Boohey Barian and the Roshni years

The second album, Roshni (1998), made her a star. Its video songs played everywhere: Dupatta, with its Matrix-inspired video, and above all Boohey Barian, filmed at Lahore's Haveli Barood Khana and still her signature song. The album sold over a million copies in Pakistan alone and went platinum. She also wrote and sang Intehai Shauq, the official theme of the 1999 Cricket World Cup, with words by her mother. Rung (2002) kept the run going with Ranjhan, Jogi Bun Kay Aa and Mahi, and Rough Cut (2007) made her the first mainstream Pakistani artist to release an album entirely in English; its Living This Lie won Best English Song at The Musik Awards.

Janan and singing across languages

Aasmaan (2009) was named the best album of its year, and in February 2010 she released Janan with the Pashto singer Irfan Khan. A Punjabi singer performing a Pashto love song became a national moment: the Los Angeles Times noted it as the song the whole country was listening to, and the record is credited with reviving mainstream interest in Pashto culture. Language was never a wall for her; alongside Urdu and Punjabi she has sung in Kashmiri, Pashto and English, performed Bulleh Shah and Amir Khusro on Coke Studio in 2012, and covered Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's Jani Door Gaye in 2023.

What is Hadiqa Kiani doing beyond singing?

She judged Pakistan Idol in 2013 and 2014, hosted the talk show Aap Kay Sitaray, and in 2017 released WAJD, a visual album of folk renderings made with her brother, which won Album of the Year at the Lux Style Awards 2018. Acting followed: she voiced and sang for the animated film 3 Bahadur: Rise of the Warriors (2018), then took the lead role of Sakina in the television drama Raqeeb Se (2021), a part far from the pop stage. Her 2022 album VASL revisited the songs of Raaz, and Spotify's EQUAL programme put her on a billboard in New York's Times Square.

Three decades on stage

From the PTV children's studio to Times Square is a long road for any singer, and Kiani walked it while the industry changed around her: cassettes to satellite television to streaming. The constants were the classical training underneath the pop and a willingness to sing wherever the song lived, in whichever language it was written. Boohey Barian still opens wedding playlists across Punjab on both sides of the border, and the Rawalpindi schoolgirl who sang a thousand songs for children is now one of the senior figures of Pakistani music.
