Atif Aslam: Aadat singer from Wazirabad

Atif Aslam (born 12 March 1983) is a Pakistani playback singer, songwriter and actor from Wazirabad in Punjab whose first song, Aadat, turned a college band recording into an anthem for a generation. He went on to become one of South Asia's most loved voices across Pakistani and Indian films, and his Coke Studio qawwali Tajdar-e-Haram is one of the most watched music videos ever to come out of Pakistan.

Early life in Wazirabad, Lahore and Rawalpindi

He was born Muhammad Atif Aslam on 12 March 1983 in Wazirabad, Punjab, Pakistan, into a middle class Punjabi family. All three of his brothers work with him: Shahzad as photographer, Shahbaz as designer and manager, and Shiraaz as his website coordinator. He went to Kimberley Hall School in Lahore until 1991, then to St Paul's Cambridge School in Satellite Town, Rawalpindi. In 1995 he returned to Lahore, studied at a Divisional Public School and College, attended Fazaia Inter College for his higher secondary studies from 1999 to 2001, and later went to the University of Central Punjab.

His first ambition was cricket. A fast bowler, he was selected for the Pakistan under-19 team, but he did not go ahead, as his parents wanted him to become an engineer. Music had its own early start: he first competed on stage at the age of 15, and won, before singing in various talent contests.

Aadat, Jal and the solo breakthrough

In 2002 Aslam co-founded the band Jal with Goher Mumtaz. Their debut single Aadat, released in late 2003 while he was still the lead vocalist, became an instant viral success, one of the first Pakistani songs to spread across the young internet. Shortly after, creative differences split the band, and Aslam went solo.

His debut solo album Jal Pari came in 2004 and carried his own version of Aadat. Doorie followed in 2006 and Meri Kahani in 2008, the last of them nominated for Best Album at the Lux Style Awards. By then his high, belting voice, able to hold a note until it aches, was the sound of a new Pakistani pop generation.

Bollywood's voice of romance

Bollywood arrived in 2005 with Woh Lamhe from the film Zeher and Aadat: Juda Hoke Bhi from Kalyug. Pehli Nazar Mein from Race in 2008 won him an IIFA Award. In Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani in 2009 he sang Tu Jaane Na and Tera Hone Laga Hoon. Later landmarks include Jeena Jeena from Badlapur in 2015 and Dil Diyan Gallan from Tiger Zinda Hai in 2017, a song that passed 670 million views on YouTube by January 2021.

He performs mainly in Urdu and Punjabi and has also recorded songs in Hindi, Bengali, Persian and Pashto. Following the 2016 Uri attack, Pakistani artists faced restrictions on working in India: his Indian concerts were cancelled, some platforms temporarily removed his songs, and his Bollywood career stalled. He has since described the restrictions as a ban of roughly a decade. His audience in Pakistan and across the diaspora only grew in those years.

What makes his Coke Studio performances special?

Aslam has been a headline performer on Coke Studio Pakistan across seasons 5, 8 and 12. His rendition of the qawwali Tajdar-e-Haram, first sung by the Sabri Brothers and released on season 8 in August 2015, reached 540 million views on YouTube by July 2020, the first video originating in Pakistan to reach that mark, and it has been viewed in 186 countries. Season 12 opened with his Wohi Khuda Hai, and his season 8 duet Man Aamadeh Am with Gul Panra remains a fan favourite. The draw is the contrast: a pop star's control placed at the service of Sufi poetry, sung live, with nowhere to hide.

Actor, honours and family

In 2011 he took the lead role in Bol, an Urdu social drama, singing the duets Hona Tha Pyar and Kaho Aaj Bol Do with Hadiqa Kiani. In 2022 he made his television acting debut in the drama Sang-e-Mah. On Defence Day 2016 he sang Yaariyaan with fellow Lahore star Ali Zafar, in a composition by Sahir Ali Bagga. The Government of Pakistan gave him the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz in 2008. On 22 April 2012 he became the first Pakistani to perform at London's O2 Arena, returning the following year, and in 2019 he received a star on The Dubai Stars. In 2020 he was named in Forbes Asia's 100 Digital Stars list.

He married Sara Bharwana in 2013, and they have three children. His brothers remain part of his working life, and his devoted fan community calls itself the Aadeez, after his own nickname.
