Ali Zafar: Channo singer from Lahore

Ali Zafar (born 18 May 1980) is a Pakistani singer-songwriter, actor and painter from Lahore whose debut single Channo made him a pop phenomenon across South Asia. He crossed into Bollywood as an actor with Tere Bin Laden, came home to headline Pakistan's own Teefa in Trouble, and in 2021 received the Pride of Performance, one of his country's highest civilian honours.

A professor's son who painted

Ali Mohammad Zafar was born in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan, into a Punjabi family. His parents, Mohammad Zafarullah and Kanwal Ameen, were professors at the University of Punjab: his father was a painter who retired as chairman of the fine arts department of his college, and his mother was Pakistan's first scholar in library science. He has two brothers, Zain and Danyal, the younger of whom is also a singer and actor.

He was educated at C.A.A. Public School and the Government College University in Lahore, and in 2002 he took an honours degree in painting from the National College of Arts. Before fame, he earned his living as a sketch artist at the Pearl Continental Hotel in Lahore, drawing portraits of guests, and began acting in television serials.

Channo and the Huqa Pani years

His television debut came in the serials Kollege Jeans and Kanch Ke Par in 2000, followed by Landa Bazar in 2002. He sang Jugnuon Se Bhar Le Aanchal for the film Shararat in 2003, and the same year released his debut album Huqa Pani. Its single Channo topped chart after chart; the album sold over five million copies worldwide and won the Lux Style Award for Best Album in 2004.

The second album Masty came in 2006, and the video of its song Dekha was billed as the most expensive music video made in Pakistan; the song was later used in the Hollywood film Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. Zafar won the Youth Icon award at the Lux Style Awards in 2007, and his third album Jhoom, released in 2011, won the Lux award for Best Music Album the following year.

Bollywood's Pakistani leading man

In 2010 Zafar made his cinema debut in the Bollywood satire Tere Bin Laden, playing a Pakistani journalist who fakes an Osama bin Laden video to reach America. The film was a commercial success in India and was banned in Pakistan, and his performance brought him Best Male Debut nominations at several award ceremonies, including Filmfare. In March 2011 he became the first Pakistani invited to the Indian Film Festival of Australia for a screening of his film.

He followed it with Mere Brother Ki Dulhan in 2011, London, Paris, New York in 2012, for which he also composed the soundtrack, the hit comedy Chashme Baddoor in 2013, Total Siyappa and Kill Dil in 2014, and a role as a musician in Dear Zindagi in 2016. For a few years, the boy from Lahore was one of Mumbai's most bankable imports.

What did Teefa in Trouble change for Ali Zafar?

In 2018 Zafar starred opposite Maya Ali in Teefa in Trouble, a romantic action comedy directed by Ahsan Rahim. It was his debut in Pakistani cinema, and the debut of his own company, Lightingale Productions. The film became one of the biggest Pakistani hits of its year, and Zafar won Best Actor in the viewers' choice at the Lux Style Awards. Its importance was simple: it proved he could open a big film at home, in Lahore's own industry, and no longer needed Mumbai to be a movie star.

Coke Studio, PSL anthems and honours

On Coke Studio Pakistan he performed in the first two seasons in 2008, returned in season 8 in 2015 with Rockstar, which was named Song of the Year, and sang four songs in season 10 in 2017, including Julie alongside his brother Danyal. He wrote and performed the Pakistan Super League anthems Ab Khel Ke Dikha in 2016 and Ab Khel Jamay Ga in 2017, and on Defence Day 2016 he sang the duet Yaariyaan with Atif Aslam. In 2013 he was voted the Sexiest Asian Man on the Planet in a worldwide poll by the British newspaper Eastern Eye.

He has received five Lux Style Awards, and on 23 March 2021 President Arif Alvi awarded him the Pride of Performance for his contribution to the arts and music. His fourth album, Roshni, was released in 2025. He married Ayesha Fazli in 2009, and they have a son and a daughter.
