Sunanda Sharma is a Punjabi singer and actress from Fatehgarh Churian, Punjab, whose 2017 singles Patake and Jaani Tera Naa made her one of Punjabi music's biggest voices. She rose from YouTube cover videos in college to Bollywood playback, acting roles and a 2024 Cannes appearance, with Jaani Tera Naa crossing 334 million views.

Early life and education

Sunanda Sharma was born on 30 January 1992 in Fatehgarh Churian, a town in Gurdaspur district of Punjab's Majha region. She is the daughter of Vinod Kumar Sharma and Suman Sharma, and grew up with an elder brother and an elder sister, Raj. Her family background was ordinary and middle class, and music was a childhood interest rather than a career plan: by her own account, she loved singing as a child but never imagined she would become a professional singer.

Sharma graduated from Khalsa College in Amritsar and went on to earn a Master's degree in English from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. Her student years turned out to be the launchpad for everything that followed, because it was in college that she first started recording herself singing.

How did Sunanda Sharma become famous?

Sharma began by singing cover versions of popular songs and uploading the videos to Facebook and YouTube. This was the mid-2010s, when Punjabi music was just discovering how powerful social media could be, and her clear voice and confident screen presence quickly gathered a following. Her 2016 cover of the folk song "Sucha Soorma" went viral, and the attention it brought changed her trajectory: composers and music labels began offering her work.

Her official debut single, "Billi Akh", arrived in 2016, but it was the next year that made her a star. "Patake" (2017) turned her into a name across Punjab, and "Jaani Tera Naa", released in September 2017 with music by Sukh E and lyrics by Jaani, became a phenomenon. Acting and screen work

Sharma made her acting debut as Jeeti Kaur in the 2018 Punjabi war drama Sajjan Singh Rangroot, directed by Pankaj Batra and released on 23 March 2018, appearing opposite Diljit Dosanjh and Yograj Singh. The film gave her an acting credit alongside one of Punjabi cinema's biggest stars early in her career.

She has since appeared on screen in music videos rather than full film roles. She played the female lead opposite Nawazuddin Siddiqui in B Praak's hugely popular 2021 video "Baarish Ki Jaaye" (an acting role only; the song is sung by B Praak), and in 2025 she appeared in the video for Karan Aujla's "Boyfriend", again as an actress. What happened in the 2025 Mad4Music dispute?

In March 2025 Sharma became the subject of national media attention after a public dispute with Mad4Music, the label that had released most of her early work. In a formal complaint she accused the label's founder, Pushpinder Dhaliwal, popularly known as Pinky Dhaliwal, of financial exploitation over several years. She alleged that he had withheld her payments despite, in her words, her work generating earnings of over Rs 250 crore, and that he and his son had forged her signature on contracts and other documents, taking control of her music rights, performance rights and other creative assets. She also alleged intimidation whenever she asked for her dues, and declared publicly on Instagram that she is an independent artist, not contractually bound to any individual or entity.

On 8 March 2025 Punjab Police arrested Dhaliwal from outside his home in Sector 71, Mohali, following an FIR registered at Mataur police station. He was booked under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including criminal breach of trust, cheating, forgery and criminal intimidation. Raj Lali Gill, chairperson of the Punjab State Commission for Women, took suo motu cognisance of the matter and directed the police to submit an action-taken report. Dhaliwal denied all the allegations against him. Shortly after the arrest, the Punjab and Haryana High Court termed the arrest illegal and ordered his release. The case drew wide coverage, including by Mint, and became one of the most discussed examples of the financial disputes between artists and labels in the Punjabi music industry.

Recent work and today

After the dispute, Sharma continued to release music independently. In 2026 she signed a global distribution deal with Virgin Music Group, the Universal-owned distributor, covering her future releases worldwide. The partnership began with her single "Jogi", released on 21 May 2026. Announcing the deal, Virgin's Mukesh Sharma called her one of the most loved and impactful voices in Punjabi music and said the aim was to take her songs to audiences in every major market. Sharma herself said the collaboration matched her goal of expanding Punjabi music worldwide.

8 ਮਾਰਚ 2025 ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੇ ਮੋਹਾਲੀ ਦੇ ਸੈਕਟਰ 71 ਵਿੱਚ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਦੇ ਬਾਹਰੋਂ ਧਾਲੀਵਾਲ ਨੂੰ ਗ੍ਰਿਫ਼ਤਾਰ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ, ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਮਾਤੌਰ ਥਾਣੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਐੱਫਆਈਆਰ ਦਰਜ ਹੋਈ। ਉਸ 'ਤੇ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਦੰਡ ਸੰਘਿਤਾ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਈ ਧਾਰਾਵਾਂ ਤਹਿਤ ਮਾਮਲਾ ਦਰਜ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਰਾਧਿਕ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸਘਾਤ, ਧੋਖਾਧੜੀ, ਜਾਅਲਸਾਜ਼ੀ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਰਾਧਿਕ ਡਰਾਉਣਾ ਧਮਕਾਉਣਾ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਸਨ। ਪੰਜਾਬ ਰਾਜ ਮਹਿਲਾ ਕਮਿਸ਼ਨ ਦੀ ਚੇਅਰਪਰਸਨ ਰਾਜ ਲਾਲੀ ਗਿੱਲ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਦਾ ਖ਼ੁਦ ਨੋਟਿਸ ਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ ਦੀ ਰਿਪੋਰਟ ਦੇਣ ਦਾ ਨਿਰਦੇਸ਼ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਧਾਲੀਵਾਲ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ 'ਤੇ ਲੱਗੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੋਸ਼ਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਇਨਕਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ। ਗ੍ਰਿਫ਼ਤਾਰੀ ਤੋਂ ਥੋੜ੍ਹੀ ਦੇਰ ਬਾਅਦ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਅਤੇ ਹਰਿਆਣਾ ਹਾਈ ਕੋਰਟ ਨੇ ਗ੍ਰਿਫ਼ਤਾਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਗ਼ੈਰਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਕਰਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਰਿਹਾਈ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਇਸ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਦੀ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਖ਼ਬਰ ਆਈ, ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਿੰਟ ਵੀ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਸੀ, ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਉਦਯੋਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਲਾਕਾਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਲੇਬਲਾਂ ਵਿਚਾਲੇ ਆਰਥਿਕ ਵਿਵਾਦਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਚਰਚਿਤ ਮਿਸਾਲਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ।
