Jasbir Jassi is a Punjabi singer, lyricist and actor from Dalia Mirjanpur village in Gurdaspur district, Punjab, best known for the 1998 hit Dil Le Gayee Kudi Gujarat Di. Trained in classical and Sufi singing, he has released thirteen albums, sung for Hindi and Punjabi films, and acted in a lead role.

Jasbir Jassi is from Dalia Mirjanpur, a village in Dinanagar tehsil of Gurdaspur district in the Majha region of Punjab. The Kosh place entry for his village is listed as Mirjanpur, and Jassi himself has described his birthplace as a small place called Mirzanpur, Dalian. He was born there on 7 February 1970 and spent his childhood in the village before going to Jalandhar to study music.

Early life and training

Jassi was born Jasbir Singh Bains to Ajit Singh Bains and Prakash Kaur, and grew up with two elder sisters. He was the first musician in his family. His mother believed in his talent, while his father was strict and wanted the security of a government job for his son, and only came round once the singing began to succeed. Jassi has recalled hiding his tumbi from his father as a boy, because his father did not approve of the music.

He studied at the government school in Baniar and began formal music training in classes nine and ten. He went on to complete a master's degree in music at APJ College in Jalandhar, studying theatre arts alongside. His official biography says he played the harmonium as a child and trained in classical music under V. S. Jolly and the Sufi singer Puran Shah Koti, with the classical singer Ustad Shaukat Ali Khan a heavy influence on his style.

Theatre stayed with him. As a young man he acted in musical plays such as Sadha Bugdu Bulo and performed at the North Zone Cultural Centre. He later credited his theatre years, and teachers such as Harpal Tiwana and Gursharan Singh, with giving him the diction and stage presence to handle fame. Before music paid, he also spent a year working in the police department.

The famous song grew out of a real meeting. At a National Integration Camp in Himachal Pradesh in 1989, the young Jassi met a girl from Bhuj in the Kutch region of Gujarat. She later married someone else, and Jassi traced her in 1998. That year, travelling towards Gwalior and low in spirits, he said the line dil le gayee kudi Gujarat di aloud to his travelling companion, and built the song around it. The track turned a personal memory into an all-India hit and fixed his name in the Punjabi pop wave of the 1990s.

Albums and the Sufi turn

A run of albums followed the breakthrough: Kudi Kudi (1999), whose title song became another signature, Nishani Pyar Di (2001) with the popular Channo Da, Just Jassi (2002), Mukhda Chann Varga (2004) and Akh Mastani (2007). His ninth studio album, Jassi: Back with a Bang, came out in July 2010, and by 2016 he had released thirteen albums in all.

Alongside the pop records, Jassi kept returning to the folk and Sufi music he says he loves most. He gave his 2015 song Ranjha a Sufi and pahari colouring, and in 2016 he released O Laal Ni, a Sufi track on words of Baba Bulleh Shah. For Coke Studio @ MTV Season 2 in 2012 he recorded Subhan Allah with Ehsaan and Loy, a performance his official site singles out for showing his Sufi side. He has often spoken against abusive lyrics and gun culture in Punjabi songs, arguing that good words cleanse the mind and soul.

Film songs and acting

Hindi films gave his voice a second stage. He sang Pyar Mere in Dobara (2004) and Mahiya in Hope and a Little Sugar (2006), then the title song of the Punjabi film Mel Karade Rabba (2010). His best known Hindi film song is Laung Da Lashkara from Patiala House (2011), sung with Mahalakshmi Iyer and Hard Kaur to music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. In 2019 he sang and composed Ek Onkar for Kesari, and joined Badshah and Dhvani Bhanushali on Koka in Khandaani Shafakhana, composed by Tanishk Bagchi.

Acting ran beside the singing. After a guest appearance as Muraad in Heer Ranjha (2009), he played his first lead role in Khushiyaan (2011), training with N. K. Sharma for the part, and appeared as a government officer in Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar (2014). Television also drew on his experience: he judged the singing shows Voice of Punjab 2 in 2011, Ticket to Bollywood in 2014 and Awaaz Punjab Di in 2016, and in 2012 he performed at the Cannes Film Festival.

Recent work and family

Jassi still performs and records. In August 2021 he released the patriotic single Azaadi: The Independence with Nobby Singh, and singles such as Heer and Dil Mangdi came the same year. Speaking at the Cinevesture International Film Festival in March 2025, he pushed back at shallow screen portraits of Punjabis, saying that Punjabis do have depth, and he spoke of the company of Hans Raj Hans, Puran Shah Koti and the late poet Surjit Patar as a lasting enrichment of his music.

Music now runs in the family. His sons Simba and Jerry launched their debut song Liar in May 2024, co-written with their father and released on his label JJ Musics as part of the six-song EP East West Boy, with Simba singing and Jerry composing alongside Jassi. One of his sons trained at the Berklee College of Music in the United States, fulfilling a training dream Jassi once held for himself, while Jerry studied sound and music production at Point Blank in London. Jassi says he has always taught his sons to be humble and to stay grounded.

Legacy

Jassi's place in Punjabi music rests on a rare combination: classical and Sufi training underneath a pop career, and songs built on melody and clean words rather than noise. Dil Le Gayee Kudi Gujarat Di remains one of the defining Punjabi pop songs of the 1990s, still the first track most listeners name. His official biography also records that the Election Commission of India appointed him a National Icon, alongside figures such as M. S. Dhoni and Aamir Khan, to encourage people to take part in elections. More than three decades after his first album, he remains a working singer whose sons now record beside him.
