Amritsar Youth Shot Dead Over Scooter Parking Row

A young man was shot dead outside his own home in Amritsar after an argument over a parked scooter, in a killing that has again put Punjab's street violence and the state government's law and order record at the centre of political attack.

The victim, Amit Sabharwal, was shot five to six times with a pistol in the Anand Avenue locality, police said. He died on the spot. No arrests had been made by Saturday afternoon, and police teams were raiding to trace the accused.

How did the parking row turn fatal?

Gate Hakima police station in-charge Baljinder Singh said the victim's father, Sunil Sabharwal, informed police on Friday night. Amit had arrived outside his home with a friend, and their Activa scooter was parked outside the house. Three brothers from the same neighbourhood, identified by police as Abhi Shah, Sunny Shah and Hritik Shah, arrived and asked for the Activa to be moved to one side.

An argument followed. Police say Abhi Shah then fired about five to six rounds from a pistol at Amit Sabharwal, killing him. The SHO said police were examining footage of the incident and that raids were being conducted. The accused, he said, would soon be arrested and put behind bars.

What has been the political reaction?

The killing drew a sharp reaction from BJP leader Ravneet Singh Bittu, who said law and order had completely collapsed in Punjab. Calling the shooting spine-chilling, he asked when Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who also holds the home portfolio, would take responsibility for the violence. The exchange comes in a week when the Punjab Assembly has been dominated by opposition attacks on the government over murders linked to the drug trade and gang violence.

For residents of Anand Avenue, the immediate shock is simpler: a dispute of the kind neighbours settle every day, over where a scooter stands, ended with a young man dead outside his home and three brothers from the same street on the run.

Police say the investigation is at an early stage. The weapon has not been recovered, and the accused are yet to be arrested. Officers are working through footage and local information to trace where the three brothers went after the shooting.
