Ferozepur ANTF Seizes 14.965 kg Heroin, Two Held

Punjab's Anti-Narcotics Task Force has seized one of the season's larger heroin consignments in the border district of Ferozepur, arresting two alleged smugglers who were carrying 14.965 kg of the drug in 30 packets on a motorcycle.

The two men were intercepted near Rauke Hithar village in the Guru Har Sahai area after the ANTF laid a trap on specific inputs, officials said. Both are residents of Chhanga Rai Hithar village.

How were the two smugglers caught?

Assistant Inspector General of Police, ANTF, Gurinderbir Singh said the team acted on specific information and set a trap near Rauke Hithar. The accused, Simon Singh, also known as Saimal, and Harbhajan Singh, also known as Babbu, were travelling on a motorcycle, registration PB 05 AW 0953, when they were apprehended. The heroin, packed in 30 packets, was recovered from their possession.

A case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act has been registered at the ANTF police station in SAS Nagar, FIR number 249, the AIG said.

What is the ANTF investigating now?

Preliminary investigation suggests the two men were using the motorcycle for local transportation and delivery of the heroin consignment, officials said. The ANTF is now tracing where the consignment came from, the money trail behind it, the suspected hawala channels used to pay for it and the people it was meant to reach. More arrests are expected as investigators establish the backward and forward linkages of the network.

Ferozepur, which sits on the Pakistan border, has seen repeated large heroin recoveries this year, by the ANTF, district police and the Border Security Force. Consignments are typically moved in small packets by local carriers, which is why investigators focus on the delivery riders: they are often the first link that can be followed back to the source and forward to the buyers.

The arrested men are being questioned. Police said the quantity recovered, just under 15 kg in 30 packets of roughly half a kilogram each, points to a consignment meant for distribution across a wide area rather than a single local sale.

How much heroin was seized in Ferozepur?

The ANTF recovered 14.965 kg of heroin, packed in 30 packets, from two men arrested near Rauke Hithar village in the Guru Har Sahai area.

What are police probing besides the seizure?

AIG Gurinderbir Singh said investigators are tracing the source of the consignment, financial transactions, suspected hawala channels and the intended recipients, and more arrests are expected.
