Abhishek Sharma: India's T20 Opener

Abhishek Sharma (born 4 September 2000) is an Indian cricketer from Amritsar, Punjab, a left handed opening batter and slow left arm spinner who plays for Punjab, for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL and for India in Twenty20 internationals. He rose to the world No. 1 T20I batting ranking in 2025, holds India's highest T20I score of 135, and was part of the Indian squads that won the 2025 Asia Cup and the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Early life in Amritsar

Abhishek Sharma was born on 4 September 2000 in Amritsar, in the Majha region of Punjab, to Raj Kumar Sharma and Manju Sharma. His father is a former cricketer who worked in banking and coached juniors, and the game was part of the house from the start. He is the youngest of three children, with two elder sisters, Komal and Sania, and he studied at Delhi Public School, Amritsar. As a boy he opened the batting for Punjab under-14s alongside his childhood friend Shubman Gill, a pairing Punjab cricket had noticed long before either played for India. During the Covid-19 lockdown years, former India all rounder Yuvraj Singh coached and mentored him, a link Abhishek has credited repeatedly since.

Youth and Punjab career

His age group numbers were startling. In the 2015 to 2016 Vijay Merchant Trophy he scored a century on his under-16 debut and finished with 1,200 runs at an average of 109.09. He made his Punjab under-19 debut in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy in 2016, captained India under-19s to the 2016 Asia Cup title, finishing as player of the match in the final, and was a key member of the side that won the 2018 Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand, scoring a half century in the quarter final against Bangladesh.

He made his first class debut for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy on 6 October 2017. In February 2021, against Madhya Pradesh, he scored a hundred off 42 balls, the fastest List A century by an Indian at the time. His defining domestic season came in 2023 to 2024, when he captained Punjab to their first Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title, scoring 485 runs in ten innings at a strike rate of 192.46, the tournament's second highest tally.

How did Abhishek Sharma become an IPL star?

Delhi Daredevils bought the 17 year old at the 2018 IPL auction for Rs 55 lakh, and on debut that May he struck 46 off 19 balls against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Sunrisers Hyderabad signed him in 2019, and after several seasons in the middle order he was promoted to open in 2022, scoring 426 runs that year. The breakthrough came in 2024, when his opening partnership with Travis Head powered Hyderabad to the final: Abhishek made 484 runs at a strike rate of 200 and hit 42 sixes, the most in the tournament. Hyderabad retained him for Rs 14 crore before the 2025 mega auction, and in April 2025 he repaid them with 141 off 55 balls against Punjab Kings, the highest score by an SRH batter and one of the highest in IPL history.

India career: records at the top of the order

Abhishek made his T20I debut against Zimbabwe at Harare on 6 July 2024, and in his second match, a day later, he scored a century, becoming the fastest Indian to a T20I hundred measured by innings played. In February 2025 at the Wankhede Stadium he made 135 off 54 balls against England, with 13 sixes: the highest individual score for India in T20 internationals. At the 2025 Asia Cup in the UAE he was the tournament's top scorer with 314 runs in seven innings and its player of the tournament, as India won the title. That run carried him to No. 1 in the ICC T20I batting rankings, the youngest Indian to reach the top, and to 931 rating points, the highest mark recorded in the format.

The year 2026 tested and then confirmed him. At the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka he endured a miserable group stage, missing a match through illness and collecting three ducks, then scored 52 off 21 balls in the final as India lifted the trophy. In September 2026 he hit a century off 30 balls against Afghanistan in Delhi, finishing with 108 off 34: the fastest T20I century by a player from a full member nation. In October 2026 he made 61 off 28 balls against Pakistan in the Asian Games final at Aichi-Nagoya, helping India to the gold medal.

Playing style and standing

Abhishek is a batting all rounder in name but a pure top order weapon in practice: a left hander who attacks from the first ball, scores heavily square and down the ground, and treats the powerplay as an opportunity rather than a risk. His slow left arm spin, once a regular second skill in domestic cricket, is now an occasional option. Coaches and opponents describe a method built on early intent: few batters in the world game score as fast, as consistently, in the first six overs. From Amritsar's school grounds to the top of the world rankings inside a decade, his rise is the clearest recent example of Punjab's age group system producing a world class T20 cricketer.
