Punjab Kings Lose Coaches Hopes and Haddin Ahead of IPL 2027
Punjab Kings have lost two more members of Ricky Ponting's support staff ahead of IPL 2027. Fast-bowling coach James Hopes and fielding coach Brad Haddin have left to take head-coaching jobs in Australian domestic cricket, reports said on Thursday, October 8.
Who has left Punjab Kings?
Hopes has been named head coach of Queensland and the Brisbane Heat, while Haddin has taken charge of the New South Wales men's team. Haddin joined Punjab Kings in 2022 under Trevor Bayliss and stayed on after Ponting took over, while Hopes moved with Ponting from Delhi Capitals ahead of the 2025 season.
PTI reported that the franchise parted ways with both on Thursday, with the team thanking them on its official X handle. Some outlets said the exits were expected, and one noted the franchise had yet to formally confirm them.
How many coaches has the franchise now lost?
The two exits follow that of spin-bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule, who served in IPL 2026 before becoming spin-bowling coach of India's men's team. That leaves Punjab Kings looking for a fast-bowling coach, a fielding coach and a spin-bowling coach.
What happens next?
Cricbuzz reported that Ponting will have the final say on replacements and that appointments could be finalised before the IPL auction in mid-December. Both Hopes and Haddin are currently busy in Sheffield Shield action in Australia.
Why does it matter for Punjab fans?
Punjab Kings, captained by Shreyas Iyer, started IPL 2026 with six straight wins and led the table for nearly a month before a slump left them out of the playoffs. A rebuilt backroom will shape how the team approaches the next season from its Mullanpur base near Chandigarh.
Who are the Punjab Kings coaches leaving?
Fast-bowling coach James Hopes and fielding coach Brad Haddin, both Australians, have left to coach Queensland/Brisbane Heat and New South Wales respectively.
Who is Punjab Kings' head coach?
Ricky Ponting, the former Australia captain, who joined the franchise ahead of IPL 2025 and is expected to choose the replacements.
When is the IPL 2027 auction?
Reports say it is expected in mid-December, and Punjab Kings aim to finalise new coaches before then.
