India captain Shreyas Iyer produced an innings for the record books on Tuesday, hammering his maiden T20I century as India cruised to an eight-wicket win over West Indies in the first T20I at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
Chasing 172, India finished at 172 for 2 in just 14.4 overs, with Iyer unbeaten on 102 from 43 balls. The win — India's tenth T20I victory in a row — gave the hosts a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
The captain's knock
Iyer walked in with India wobbling at 35 for 2 after Sanju Samson (11) and Abhishek Sharma (21) fell inside the first four overs. He steadied the innings alongside Ishan Kishan, adding 137 for the third wicket, before launching into the West Indies attack.
The century came in style. On 95 in the 15th over, he smashed Roston Chase over long-on for a towering six to reach three figures off 42 balls — the fastest T20I hundred by an Indian against West Indies. He finished with 10 fours and six sixes at a strike rate of 237.20 and fittingly hit the winning run a ball later.
Dhir's dream debut
Earlier, debutant Naman Dhir had starred with the ball as West Indies were bowled out for 171 in 19.1 overs. The 25-year-old returned 3 for 31, repeatedly breaking the visitors' momentum, while Kuldeep Yadav (2/33) and Axar Patel (2/27) chipped in.
Shai Hope (52 off 37) and Sherfane Rutherford (56 off 34) had briefly threatened with a 63-run stand after West Indies slipped to 44 for 3, and Arshdeep Singh removed the dangerous Pooran for 12. But a late collapse left the visitors well short.
Record books rewritten
Iyer became only the third India captain to score a T20I hundred, after Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav — and the first to do it in a run chase. The previous highest by an India captain batting second in a T20I was Virat Kohli's 94* against the same opponents in Hyderabad in 2019.
It was also a happy return to the Ekana Stadium for Iyer, where he had struck a maiden IPL hundred for Punjab Kings against Lucknow Super Giants earlier this year. Named Player of the Match, he said the milestone had been on his mind: “I was actually thinking about getting my maiden T20I century and it came through. Winning tastes different.”
