The United States House of Representatives has honoured Indian flydubai pilot Captain Smit Machchhar for foiling the attempted terror attack on Flydubai Flight 1073, praising his "extraordinary courage" and condemning the mid-air assault as an "act of terrorism".
The resolution also wished the pilot, who is undergoing treatment in the United Arab Emirates, a full and speedy recovery.
The attack on Flight 1073
Machchhar was commanding the Dubai–Tel Aviv flight when his co-pilot allegedly attacked him with a crash axe inside the cockpit. Despite serious injuries, the Indian captain managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers — including Israeli national Yaniv Hayoun — to intervene and overpower the attacker. The aircraft, with 174 people on board, made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
Praise from around the world
Former Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd joined the chorus of praise, saying the world should "stand in awe" of Captain Machchhar's bravery.
The Indian embassy in the UAE said Machchhar was "making steady progress" and "regaining health" in hospital. He has already received a string of honours: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to him personally, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu invited him to a ceremony in Israel, Gujarat announced the Visisht Gujarat Garima Award for him, MP Vikramjit Sahney announced a Rs 25 lakh bravery award, and he is set to receive the Mother Teresa Memorial Award 2026.
