Jalandhar Commissionerate Police have arrested two men they allege are operatives of the banned Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), over pro-Khalistan graffiti on the wall of Red Cross Bhawan. Police also say the pair admitted vandalising an Ambedkar statue in Hoshiarpur district. The allegations are yet to be tested in court.
What happened at Red Cross Bhawan?
Pro-Khalistan slogans were found on the outer wall of Red Cross Bhawan in Jalandhar on September 29, a day before Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the city for an anti-drug rally. Police said SFJ figure Gurpatwant Singh Pannun later circulated a video of the graffiti on social media.
Who has been arrested?
Police Commissioner Satinder Singh said on Thursday, October 8, that the two accused are residents of Nihaluwal village in Jalandhar Rural and have earlier cases under the Arms Act and the NDPS Act. A Hero Splendor motorcycle allegedly used in the act was recovered.
How is the Ambedkar statue case linked?
During interrogation, police claim, the two said they also vandalised the statue of Dr B.R. Ambedkar at Barian Kalan village near Chabbewal in Hoshiarpur on the night of September 14-15. A separate FIR No. 130 had been registered at Chabbewal police station under Section 298 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

For the graffiti, FIR No. 301 was registered at Police Division No. 6 in Jalandhar under Sections 147, 152, 196 and 61(2) of the BNS and Section 66F of the IT Act. The investigation was supervised by DCP City Aditya Warrier and DCP Investigation Manpreet Singh Dhillon.
What happens next?
The accused are to be produced before a local court, where police will seek remand to trace their backward and forward linkages and identify other associates. Police are also examining whether the two incidents were part of one plan. The allegations remain subject to investigation and trial.

SFJ is a banned organisation that Indian authorities accuse of promoting secessionism. Police named Pannun as its leader in this case.
