Police in Khanna say they cracked a Rs 15-lakh carjacking within about an hour on Thursday, October 8, 2026, arresting three men, including the victim's own driver, who they allege tipped off the robbers.
The cash and the car were recovered, along with a country-made pistol, police said.
What happened outside the Khanna bank?
According to police, a scrap dealer from Mandi Gobindgarh withdrew Rs 15 lakh from a bank branch in Khanna and was heading back in his car around 1 pm. His driver stopped to buy a cigarette from a shop.
In his complaint, the dealer said two men dressed as Nihangs approached the vehicle. One took the driver's seat while the other got into the rear and grabbed him by the neck, trying to abduct him along with the cash and car.
The dealer resisted and managed to jump out during the scuffle. The two men then sped away with the car and the money, police said.
How did police crack it so fast?
Senior Superintendent of Police Dr Darpan Ahluwalia ordered the area around Khanna sealed, and city police and CIA teams went through CCTV footage, Hindi daily Dainik Bhaskar reported. Police said they acted on CCTV footage, technical inputs and human intelligence.
Superintendent of Police Rajesh Yadav said officers traced the two suspects to a deserted building on the Payal-Beeja Road, where they were allegedly dividing the cash. Seeing police, the two tried to escape by jumping from the building and suffered leg injuries; they were overpowered and taken to hospital.
What role did the driver allegedly play?
During interrogation, police said, it emerged that the complainant's driver had passed on information about the cash withdrawal to the two robbers and helped plan the crime. He was arrested along with them.
The two other accused are residents of Amloh in Fatehgarh Sahib district. Police said both already face several cases, including robbery, theft, assault, criminal conspiracy and drug peddling.
