Jasmine Sandlas (born 4 September 1985) is an Indian-American Punjabi singer and songwriter whose bold, husky voice carried 'Yaar Na Miley', the 2014 Bollywood chart-topper from the Salman Khan film Kick. Early life: Jalandhar to Stockton
Jasmine Kaur Sandlas was born on 4 September 1985 in Jalandhar, Punjab, into a Punjabi Sikh Labana family. Her mother put her on stage to sing at an early age, and during her school days she took part in many singing competitions, falling under the spell of Punjabi folk singers.
When she was 12 or 13, the family migrated to Stockton, California. The move changed her musical world: alongside the folk music of home, she absorbed West Coast hip-hop and early-2000s pop, from Dr. Dre and 50 Cent to Britney Spears and Gwen Stefani. She began writing her own songs at 16.
What is Jasmine Sandlas famous for?
Her first song, 'Muskan', released in 2007 from the underground album The Diamond (released independently in 2008, written by Lalie Gill), became a hit and won her recognition from the mainstream Punjabi music industry. In 2012, Sony Music launched her studio album Gulabi, produced by rapper Bohemia, and the album's success gave her the nickname that stuck: the Gulabi Queen.
Bollywood came calling in 2014. She sang 'Yaar Na Miley' with Yo Yo Honey Singh for the Salman Khan film Kick, and the song went viral, topped the charts and earned her widespread acclaim. Building an independent career
Rather than sign her voice away, Sandlas stayed independent and built a catalogue on her own terms. From 2017 she released a string of commercially successful singles with singer Garry Sandhu and producer Intense, including 'Illegal Weapon' and 'Laddu' (2017) and 'Sip Sip' (2018); 'Illegal Weapon' and 'Sip Sip' were later remixed for the Bollywood film Street Dancer 3D (2020). Other singles included 'Punjab De Javak' (2015), 'Ishq Da Sutta' (One Night Stand, 2016) and 'Raat Jashan Di' (Zorawar, 2016).
In 2016 she joined MTV India's Angels of Rock, a women-empowerment travel series, alongside Shalmali Kholgade, Akasa Singh and Anusha Mani. Collaborations in the same period included 'Bamb Jatt' with Amrit Maan and 'Party Nonstop' with Dr Zeus and Ikka. Her third album, What's in a Name (2020), was produced by Intense and Hark and released on her father's birthday; she followed it with the experimental TGPE (The Great Punjabi Experiment, 2021) and the Tini EP. In 2023 she was inducted into the Women Songwriter's Hall of Fame.
The film-soundtrack comeback
After a four-year gap from Bollywood, Sandlas returned in 2024 with 'Taras' for the film Munjya, and sang 'Aaja Oye' for Ulajh the same year. She contributed 'Nasha' to Raid 2 (2025) and 'Poison Baby' to Thamma (2025), and collaborated with composer Shashwat Sachdev on the web series The Ba***ds of Bollywood and the film Dhurandhar (2025), including 'Shararat' and the title track. Her fourth album, Legal Robbery, produced by Intense, arrived in October 2025, the same year she called the single 'POLS' a rebirth in her artistic journey. In 2026 she appeared on the Dhurandhar sequel's soundtrack with 'Main Aur Tu' and 'Jaiye Sajana', the latter with Satinder Sartaaj.
Her voice and music
Sandlas's sound is a blend of R&B, Hindustani classical training and Punjabi folk, delivered in a raw, husky voice that is instantly recognisable. She writes and often co-produces her own material, and her early hip-hop roots still show in her cadence and attitude. An independent artist by choice, she has performed on TEDx stages, MTV Coke Studio and spoken-word platforms.
