Early life
Sukhbir Singh was born on 9 November 1969 in Bhogpur, Jalandhar district, Punjab. When he was two years old, his parents migrated to Nairobi, Kenya, where he was raised. His father was a gyaniji at a gurdwara and a classically trained singer, and the house was full of music — his brother played tabla. Sukhbir learned instruments in a Kenyan band, moving from keyboards to drums to guitar before becoming a singer. He spent twenty years in Nairobi and even took flying lessons toward a pilot's license.
Career
Sukhbir began recording in 1991 and moved to Dubai in 1992, where he has been based ever since. His debut album New Stylee (1996), recorded in Dubai with foreign influences, was a breakthrough: it won three Channel V Awards — Best Debut Album, Best Male Vocalist and Best Music Video. The album's fusion of bhangra with rap, techno and reggae gave him the title 'Prince of Bhangra'.
His signature song 'Ishq Tera Tadpave' — known by its 'Oh Ho Ho Ho' hook — became a wedding and party staple across the diaspora. Other hits included 'Punjabi Munde', 'Gal Ban Gayee', 'Tere Naal Nachna' and 'Ni Hogaya'. He sang 'Dil Laga Na' for the Bollywood film Dhoom 2 (2006), 'Oh Ho Ho Ho' for Hindi Medium, and 'Sauda Khara Khara' for Good Newwz, and appeared as himself in the 2012 Punjabi film Pata Nahi Rabb Kehdeyan Rangan Ch Raazi.
Music style
Sukhbir is a multi-instrumentalist — tabla, dholak, guitar, piano, saxophone, drums — and his productions layer traditional Punjabi sounds over electronic dance beats. He sings in Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu and several other languages.
Personal life
He is married with twins, a son Kabir and a daughter Kiran, and holds Kenyan citizenship alongside his Indian roots. Based in Dubai, he has also become an active investor in startups.
Legacy
In the 1990s, when bhangra was still largely a folk idiom, Sukhbir made it electronic, global and dance-floor ready. The 'Prince of Bhangra' paved the way for every Punjabi fusion act that followed.
