Rajesh Khanna: Amritsar-Born First Superstar

Rajesh Khanna (1942–2012), born Jatin Khanna in Amritsar, is remembered as the first superstar of Hindi cinema. Between 1969 and the early 1970s he starred in 15 hit films in a row, won three Filmfare Best Actor awards, later served as a Member of Parliament, and was honoured with the Padma Bhushan after his death.

Early life

Khanna was born on 29 December 1942 in Amritsar, into a Punjabi Hindu Khatri family, and was named Jatin. He was adopted and raised by relatives of his birth parents, Chunni Lal Khanna and Leela Devi. His family's home stood in Gali Tiwarian, a crowded lane in Amritsar's walled city. Years later he donated the house, and it is now a temple. His cousin Muni Chand Khanna recalled that the young Jatin loved playing cricket in the neighbourhood.

His birth father, Lala Hiranand Khanna, had been a school headmaster in Burewala, now in Pakistan, and a 2012 report in the Pakistani press claimed the actor was born there. Most biographies and obituaries, including The Guardian's obituary and IANS reporting from Amritsar, give Amritsar as his birthplace.

The family moved to Bombay, where Jatin grew up in Thakurdwar, near Girgaon. He went to St Sebastian's Goan High School alongside his friend Ravi Kapoor, later the actor Jeetendra, and then studied at Kishinchand Chellaram College. An uncle changed his first name to Rajesh when he chose films as a career. Friends called him Kaka, a Punjabi word for a young boy.

Career

In 1965 Khanna won the All India Talent Contest run by United Producers and Filmfare, beating more than 10,000 entrants. The prize brought his first films, Aakhri Khat (1966), which became India's first official entry for the Academy Awards, and Raaz (1967).

Stardom arrived with Aradhana (1969), in which he played a double role, father and son, opposite Sharmila Tagore. Its songs were sung for him by Kishore Kumar, the voice he would lip-sync through his biggest hits. Hit after hit followed: Do Raaste (1969), Aan Milo Sajna and Kati Patang (1970), Haathi Mere Saathi and Anand (1971), and Daag (1973). The Guardian described the adulation he drew as verging on mass hysteria.

He won the Filmfare Best Actor award three times, for Sachaa Jhutha, Anand and Avishkaar. Even after Amitabh Bachchan, his co-star in Anand and Namak Haraam, rose as the new hero of the mid-1970s, Khanna kept working steadily: in 1985 alone, 11 films were released with him in the lead, eight of them hits. By the end of his career he had more than 150 film credits.

Khanna entered politics with the Indian National Congress and represented the New Delhi constituency in the Lok Sabha from 1992 to 1996. He kept his bond with Punjab. In 2009 the Congress offered him its Amritsar Lok Sabha ticket, which he declined, and in January 2012 he returned to his birth city to campaign for the party in the Punjab assembly elections.

Personal life

In 1973 Khanna married the actress Dimple Kapadia. They had two daughters, Twinkle and Rinke, and separated in 1982. Twinkle Khanna is married to the actor Akshay Kumar.

Legacy

Khanna died in Mumbai on 18 July 2012, aged 69, after a long illness. In 2013 the Government of India conferred the Padma Bhushan on him posthumously, and Dimple Kapadia received the award on his behalf from President Pranab Mukherjee on 20 April 2013.
