Early life
Hardavinder Singh Sandhu was born on 6 September 1986 in Patiala, Punjab, to Jasvir Singh Sandhu and Balbir Kaur. From childhood he was obsessed with cricket, playing as a fast bowler for Punjab's Under-19 side and then for the Punjab Ranji team for over a decade. In 2007 a severe elbow injury ended his cricket career, forcing him to give up the game he had dreamed of playing professionally.
From cricket to music
After the injury, Sandhu turned to singing. He took eighteen months of vocal training and released his debut album This Is Harrdy Sandhu in 2011, composed by V. Grooves, with 'Tequilla Shot' as his first song. The breakthrough came in 2013 with 'Soch', written by Jaani and composed by B Praak — a heartbreak ballad that became one of the most-loved Punjabi songs of the decade. Its success was so great that it was remade for the 2016 Bollywood film Airlift.
He followed with 'Joker' (2014), 'Hornn Blow', 'Backbone' — the first Punjabi song to cross 100 million YouTube views — and 'Naah', which was remade as 'Naah Goriye' for the Bollywood film Bala (2019). Later hits included 'Kya Baat Ay' and 'Bijlee Bijlee'.
Film career
Sandhu made his acting debut in the Punjabi film Yaaran Da Katchup (2014). In 2021 he made his Hindi film debut in Kabir Khan's sports drama 83, based on India's 1983 Cricket World Cup win — a fitting role for a former cricketer. He has since starred in the spy action drama Code Name: Tiranga (2022).
Personal life
Sandhu is married to Zenith Sandhu. He is known for his fitness, his love for pets, and for keeping a relatively low profile off stage.
Legacy
Few second acts are as complete as Hardy Sandhu's: from a career-ending injury to the top of Punjabi music. 'Soch' gave a generation its definitive heartbreak song, and his Jaani-B Praak collaborations helped define the sound of 2010s Punjabi pop.
