B Praak: Teri Mitti singer from Chandigarh

B Praak (born Pratik Bachan, 7 February 1986) is a singer, composer and music director from Chandigarh who reshaped the sound of Punjabi pop from behind the mixing desk before he ever stepped in front of the microphone. His Teri Mitti from the film Kesari won him the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer, and his songs, most of them written by his partner Jaani, have travelled from Punjab into every corner of Hindi film music.

A producer's son from Chandigarh

He was born Pratik Bachan in Chandigarh. His father, Varinder Bachan, who died in 2021, was a Punjabi and Hindi music producer and composer of pop and folk music and Hindu bhajans, who also worked in Punjabi films such as Jatt Punjab Daa. The son began his own career as a music director under the name Prakky B, producing songs that brought him little recognition.

The turn came in 2012, when he met the lyricist Jaani and the two began working together under the name B Praak. In 2013 they released Soch, sung by Harrdy Sandhu and composed by Praak, and the slow, aching love song became the first landmark of a partnership that would define a decade of Punjabi music.

The Jaani and B Praak hit factory

Through the 2010s Praak composed and produced music for the biggest voices in Punjabi pop, among them Jassie Gill, Harrdy Sandhu, Amrinder Gill, Gippy Grewal, Diljit Dosanjh and Ammy Virk. The songs piled up: Taara, Joker, Na Ji Na, Ik Saal, Do You Know, Supna, Backbone and Horn Blow, and later Qismat, Naah, Kya Baat Ay, Hath Chummne and Guitar Sikhda, nearly all with words by Jaani. In 2018 he produced the music for Qismat, a film inspired by his own song of the same name, the first time he had scored a full film.

Mann Bharrya and the turn to singing

Praak had always sung, but he stepped forward as a singer in his own right with the single Mann Bharrya, released in 2017, a song about a lover who has had enough. Bewafaai and Mastaani followed, and he sang in the film Qismat as well. The raw, swelling voice that producers had once hired others to front was suddenly the product itself. Film scoring ran alongside: he composed the songs of Ammy Virk's Sufna in 2020 and performed some of them, and in September 2021 he was music director of Qismat 2, composing two of its songs with Jaani.

Teri Mitti and the National Award

Hindi cinema opened in 2019. As a singer he sang Teri Mitti for Kesari, Ali Ali for Blank, O Saaki Saaki for Batla House alongside Neha Kakkar and Tulsi Kumar, and Maana Dil for Good Newwz, and as a composer he remade his own Naah as Naah Goriye for the film Bala. The same year he composed Pachtaoge, sung by Arijit Singh with Vicky Kaushal and Nora Fatehi in the video, and sang and composed Filhaal, whose video starred Akshay Kumar and Nupur Sanon. He also sang his first Telugu song, Suryudivo Chandrudivo, for the film Sarileru Neekevvaru.

At the 67th National Film Awards, announced on 22 March 2021, Praak won Best Male Playback Singer for Teri Mitti. He dedicated the award to his fans and recalled, in an interview reported by IANS, that when Akshay Kumar first heard the song he had called to say: you have sung the best song of my life.

What makes a B Praak song easy to recognise?

The formula is feeling, pushed to the edge: a piano or string figure, a lyric about love, loss or the motherland, and a voice that climbs until it cracks at the peak. In 2021 it carried Hindi cinema again with Shershaah, where his Ranjha became the second most streamed song of the year on Spotify in India and Mann Bharrya 2.0 remade his own breakthrough; the two songs brought him two Filmfare Awards in 2022. Filhaal 2: Mohabbat followed in July 2021, Baarish Ki Jaaye put Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Sunanda Sharma in its video, and in 2022 Bachchan Pandey became his first Bollywood film as a full music director.

Family

Praak married Meera in Chandigarh in 2019. They have a son, Adabb, born in 2020; a second son, Fazza, died at the time of his birth in 2022, a loss Praak has spoken of with rare openness for a star of his size. His father's death in 2021 closed the circle of the family trade: the producer's son from Chandigarh had become the sound of his generation.
