Abbotsford is a city in British Columbia, Canada, in the Fraser Valley east of Vancouver, just north of the Canada–United States border. At the 2021 census it had 153,524 residents, making it the largest municipality in British Columbia outside metropolitan Vancouver. Known as the "City in the Country", it is one of the biggest Punjabi diaspora hubs in the world — and home to the Gur Sikh Temple, opened in 1911, the oldest surviving gurdwara in North America.

A Punjabi city in the Fraser Valley

The 2021 census reported 38,395 Sikhs in Abbotsford — 25.5 percent of the population — and Punjabi is the mother tongue of 34,280 residents (22.6 percent), with 41,145 (27.3 percent) able to speak it. South Asians make up 30.2 percent of the city (45,505 people), and immigrants are 28.6 percent of the population, with India (23,830 people, 55.2 percent) by far the top country of origin. Punjabi settlement here goes back to the early 1900s, when Sikh pioneers arrived to work on farms and in the lumber industry; today the Abbotsford–Mission area has the third-highest proportion of visible minorities of any census metropolitan area in Canada.

The Gur Sikh Temple: a national historic site

The first Sikh pioneers reached the Abbotsford area in 1905. Plans for a gurdwara were made in 1908, and the settlers carried lumber from a local mill on their backs up a hill to build it. When it opened on February 26, 1911, Sikhs and non-Sikhs from across British Columbia attended, and a local newspaper covered the ceremony. The two-storey wooden building looked from outside like a frontier-town store, with Sikh design elements kept to the interior — langar and dining room on the first floor, prayer hall on the second. In 2002 it was designated a National Historic Site of Canada, the only gurdwara outside India and Pakistan with that status; earlier Canadian gurdwaras in Golden (1905) and Vancouver's Kitsilano (1908) were destroyed by fire or demolished, leaving Abbotsford's the continent's oldest still standing.

City in the Country: farming roots

Abbotsford calls itself the "City in the Country" and the "Raspberry Capital of Canada": at 375.33 square kilometres it is the largest city by land area in British Columbia, much of it farmland with views of Mount Baker and the Coast Mountains. The city's flag carries a strawberry blossom for the local berry industry. European settlement began with a Royal Engineers survey in 1858; the town's name is most often traced to Henry Braithwaite Abbott, a Canadian Pacific Railway superintendent. It is also home to Abbotsford International Airport — where Pope John Paul II held an open-air Mass for 200,000 people in 1984 — the University of the Fraser Valley, and the Tradex exhibition centre.

Floods and resilience

The city's flat farmland comes with water. The Fraser River's great flood of 1948 hit Abbotsford hard, and in November 2021 an atmospheric river swamped the Sumas Prairie, forcing a mass evacuation the city called "catastrophic". The prairie — former lakebed drained for some of the richest farmland in Canada — was under water again, a reminder that Abbotsford's prosperity is built on land reclaimed from a lake.

What makes Abbotsford important to the Punjabi diaspora?

With 38,395 Sikhs (25.5 percent) and Punjabi the mother tongue of 22.6 percent of residents, Abbotsford is one of the densest Punjabi concentrations outside India — and it hosts the continent's oldest surviving gurdwara, the Gur Sikh Temple (1911), anchoring more than a century of Sikh-Canadian history.

Why is the Gur Sikh Temple historically significant?

Built by hand by Sikh pioneers and opened on February 26, 1911, it is the oldest surviving Sikh gurdwara in North America and the only gurdwara outside India and Pakistan designated a National Historic Site of Canada (2002). A Sikh Heritage Museum now operates on its ground floor.
