Brampton is a city in Ontario, Canada — the country’s ninth-largest municipality and the seat of the Regional Municipality of Peel, on the northwestern edge of the Greater Toronto Area. To Punjabis it is something more: the largest Punjabi and Sikh community outside India, a city where Punjabi is heard on every main street and Vaisakhi is a civic celebration. Its old nickname, the "Flower City," remembers a 19th-century greenhouse empire; its new identity belongs to the Punjabi diaspora.

The Flower City

The city is named after the town of Brampton in Cumberland, England. John Elliott laid out lots for sale here in 1834; it was incorporated as a village in 1853 and as a town in 1873, and became a city in 1974 when the townships of Chinguacousy and Toronto Gore were folded in — bringing with them Bramalea, Canada’s first satellite community, whose name joins "Bram" (Brampton), "Mal" (Malton) and "Lea," an Old English word for meadow.

In 1863, Edward Dale, an immigrant from Dorking, England, established a flower nursery in Brampton. At its height his company ran 140 greenhouses — the largest cut-flower business in North America, producing 20 million blooms — and 48 hothouse flower nurseries once operated in the town. A Flower Festival founded in 1963 and the city’s 2002 Flower City Strategy keep that heritage alive; the Rose Theatre takes its name from it, and Gage Park was carved from the Alderlea estate after Sir William J. Gage donated part of its grounds to the town in 1902.

Canada’s Punjabi capital

The 2021 census counted 656,480 residents — Canada’s ninth-largest city and Ontario’s fourth. Of them, 52.4 percent are of South Asian origin, making Brampton the first and only South Asian–majority city in Canada. The Sikh community numbers 163,260 (25.11 percent); Punjabi is the mother tongue of 141,005 residents (21.7 percent) and is known by 189,235 (29.1 percent).

Gurdwaras serve the community across the city, and each April brings Sikh Heritage Month, marked with civic events in Brampton. The famous Dixie Gurdwara — Ontario Khalsa Darbar, founded in 1978 — stands just across the city line in Mississauga, and Vaisakhi Nagar Kirtans roll through the region every spring. Punjabi plazas, radio stations and businesses shape the city’s daily life, which is why Brampton is often called a “mini-Punjab.”

An economy built on movement

Brampton is home to Canada’s largest intermodal railway terminal — CN’s Brampton Intermodal Terminal — and sits beside Toronto Pearson International Airport, with a network of transcontinental highways putting 158 million consumers within a day’s drive, near the U.S. border.

More than 8,600 businesses operate here, including the headquarters of Loblaw, Canada’s largest retailer and private-sector employer, alongside Coca-Cola Bottling and Medtronic.

Notable people and landmarks

The poet Rupi Kaur (b. 1992), whose collection Milk and Honey became a global bestseller, was raised in Brampton. So was the Punjabi singer Shubh (Shubhneet Singh Gill), born in India and raised in Brampton, who became the second Punjabi artist after Diljit Dosanjh to land a solo cover on Billboard Canada.

Downtown landmarks include Gage Park, the historic Dominion Building with its clock tower on Queen Street East, the Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives, and the Rose Theatre. Gurbax Singh Malhi, Canada’s first turban-wearing Sikh MP, represented Bramalea—Gore—Malton for 18 years and was awarded the Key to the City of Brampton.
