Where is Chainpur?

Chainpur is a village in Lopoke tehsil of Amritsar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Raja Sansi, about 5 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Harsa Chhina community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037367, and it covers 279 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,341 people in Chainpur: 719 men and 622 women, living in 219 households, an average of about 6.1 people per household. Spread over its 279 hectares, the population density works out to about 481 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 865 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 167, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 537 people, about 40 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 71.04 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 75.52 per cent and women at 66 per cent. The census recorded 458 workers, about 34 per cent of the village. Of the 432 main workers, the largest group, 158, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 152 cultivators on their own land and 111 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 26 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Chainpur's land. Of the village's 279 hectares, 212 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (156 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (56 hectares). About 67 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 161 cultivators and 159 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Lopoke, the tehsil headquarters, and Amritsar city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel.
