Where is Daud?

Daud is a village of Baba Bakala tehsil in Amritsar district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Rayya, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Rayya community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037808, and it covers 139 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 707 people in Daud: 377 men and 330 women, living in 127 households, an average of about 5.6 people per household. Spread over its 139 hectares, the population density works out to about 509 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 875 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 76, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 368 people, about 52 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 73.69 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 79.27 per cent and women at 67.66 per cent. The census recorded 191 workers, about 27 per cent of the village. A further 46 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Daud's land. Of the village's 139 hectares, 124 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (124 hectares). About 15 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 49 cultivators and 54 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
