Where is Dhardeo?

Dhardeo is a village in Baba Bakala tehsil of Amritsar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Rayya, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Rayya community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037809, and it covers 966 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 6,531 people in Dhardeo: 3,515 men and 3,016 women, living in 1,235 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 966 hectares, the population density works out to about 676 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 858 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 744, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 2,460 people, about 38 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 71.11 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 74.74 per cent and women at 66.93 per cent. The census recorded 3,358 workers, about 51 per cent of the village. Of the 2,126 main workers, the largest group, 829, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 695 agricultural labourers and 526 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 1,232 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (857 hectares). About 109 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 855 cultivators and 1,781 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Education in the village runs through one government primary school and one government middle school, so children can study in the village up to Class 8. The village also had an anganwadi centre and an ASHA health worker.

It also had a PDS ration shop and mobile phone coverage. It had no bank branch or ATM in the 2011 record; the nearest bank was more than ten kilometres away.
