Where is Ghoga?

Ghoga is a village of Lopoke tehsil in Amritsar district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Ajnala, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Chogawan community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037165, and it covers 218 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,015 people in Ghoga: 524 men and 491 women, living in 181 households, an average of about 5.6 people per household. Spread over its 218 hectares, the population density works out to about 466 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 937 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 181, about 18 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 588 people, about 58 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 35.73 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 41.04 per cent and women at 30.24 per cent. The census recorded 258 workers, about 25 per cent of the village. Of the 134 main workers, the largest group, 112, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 13 agricultural labourers and 9 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 124 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Ghoga's land. Of the village's 218 hectares, 216 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (216 hectares). About 2 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 4 hours a day. The census recorded 113 cultivators and 128 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

The directory recorded Ajnala, about 15 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was more than ten kilometres away. Lopoke, the tehsil headquarters, and Amritsar city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Jasraur.
