Where is Kakar?

Kakar is a village in Lopoke tehsil of Amritsar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Raja Sansi, about 18 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Chogawan community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037222, and it covers 423 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 831 people in Kakar: 426 men and 405 women, living in 141 households, an average of about 5.9 people per household. Spread over its 423 hectares, the population density works out to about 196 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 951 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 103, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 123 people, about 15 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 67.17 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 71.51 per cent and women at 62.81 per cent. The census recorded 258 workers, about 31 per cent of the village. Of the 229 main workers, the largest group, 193, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 24 other workers in trade, transport and services and 11 agricultural labourers. A further 29 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Lopoke, the tehsil headquarters, and Amritsar city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Khushupura, Tareen and Talla.
