Where is Mehlanwala?

Mehlanwala is a village of Ajnala tehsil in Amritsar district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Raja Sansi, about 5 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Harsa Chhina community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037386, and it covers 817 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,610 people in Mehlanwala: 1,389 men and 1,221 women, living in 513 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 817 hectares, the population density works out to about 319 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 879 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 317, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,180 people, about 45 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 72.26 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 75.46 per cent and women at 68.77 per cent. The census recorded 840 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 804 main workers, the largest group, 401, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 268 cultivators on their own land and 103 agricultural labourers. A further 36 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
