History

Ajnala is a historic town of Amritsar district whose name is tied to the uprising of 1857. On 30 July 1857, 282 soldiers of the 26th Native Infantry were killed and thrown into the Kalianwala Khu — the black well — an event commemorated by the Shaheedan da Khu memorial.

The town developed as a mandi and trading centre, and after Partition it remained part of the border district of Amritsar.

Geography & people

Ajnala stands west of Amritsar city, toward the border, in wheat and paddy country. The 2011 census counted 21,107 residents. The town is the market and administrative centre for the surrounding villages.

Places of interest

The Kalianwala Khu memorial, with its inscription to the martyrs of 1857, is the town's most significant site. The local gurdwaras and the grain market are its other landmarks.

Notable people

The 282 martyred soldiers of 1857 are the heroes of Ajnala's history; the area has continued to send young men to the armed forces.
