History

Majitha is a historic town of Amritsar district, the home of the Majithia sardars. In the Sikh Empire era, Majithia chiefs — including Desa Singh Majithia and Lehna Singh Majithia — held prominent positions at the Lahore Darbar.

The town developed as an agricultural trading centre and remained in Amritsar district after Partition.

Majitha stands north-west of Amritsar city, in wheat and paddy country. The 2011 census counted 14,503 residents. The town is the bazaar and service centre for the surrounding villages.
