History

Khem Karan is a town on the India–Pakistan border whose name is tied to the 1965 war. On 8–10 September 1965 the Battle of Asal Uttar was fought near here, in which the Indian Army destroyed Pakistan's Patton tanks; the area became known as 'Patton Nagar', the graveyard of Patton tanks.

Before Partition, Khem Karan was a frontier market town. After the 1965 war it became part of the national memory. In 2006 it joined the newly created Tarn Taran district.

Geography & people

Khem Karan stands a few kilometres from the border fence, west of Patti, in wheat and paddy country. The 2011 census counted 13,446 residents. The presence of the Border Security Force is part of life here.

The Asal Uttar war memorial and the border landscape are the main draws, alongside the town's railway station and local gurdwaras.

Notable people

Company Quartermaster Havildar Abdul Hamid, awarded the Param Vir Chakra for the Battle of Asal Uttar, is the name forever associated with this ground.

ਖੇਮ ਕਰਨ ਭਾਰਤ–ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਸਰਹੱਦ ਉੱਤੇ ਵਸਿਆ ਇੱਕ ਕਸਬਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ 1965 ਦੀ ਜੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ। 8–10 ਸਤੰਬਰ 1965 ਨੂੰ ਇੱਥੋਂ ਨੇੜੇ ਅਸਲ ਉੱਤੜ ਦੀ ਜੰਗ ਲੜੀ ਗਈ, ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਫ਼ੌਜ ਨੇ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਦੇ ਪੈਟਨ ਟੈਂਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਬਾਹ ਕੀਤਾ। ਇਸ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਨੂੰ 'ਪੈਟਨ ਨਗਰ' — ਪੈਟਨ ਟੈਂਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਬਰਸਤਾਨ — ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਵੰਡ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਖੇਮ ਕਰਨ ਇੱਕ ਸਰਹੱਦੀ ਮੰਡੀ-ਕਸਬਾ ਸੀ। 1965 ਦੀ ਜੰਗ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਇਹ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਯਾਦਗਾਰ ਦਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ। 2006 ਵਿੱਚ ਇਹ ਤਰਨ ਤਾਰਨ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹੋਇਆ।

ਖੇਮ ਕਰਨ ਸਰਹੱਦੀ ਵਾੜ ਤੋਂ ਕੁਝ ਕਿਲੋਮੀਟਰ ਦੀ ਦੂਰੀ ਉੱਤੇ, ਪੱਟੀ ਦੇ ਪੱਛਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਥਿਤ ਹੈ। ਇਲਾਕਾ ਕਣਕ ਅਤੇ ਝੋਨੇ ਦੀ ਖੇਤੀ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।

2011 ਦੀ ਮਰਦਮਸ਼ੁਮਾਰੀ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਆਬਾਦੀ 13,446 ਸੀ। ਸਰਹੱਦੀ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਬਲ ਦੀ ਮੌਜੂਦਗੀ ਇੱਥੋਂ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਹੈ।
