Punjab Police say they have foiled a plot to carry out violent attacks in the state during the festive season, arresting two young men in Tarn Taran district and recovering four hand grenades that investigators believe were sent across the border from Pakistan.

The operation took place in the Khem Karan area, close to the international border, late on Monday night, October 5, 2026. A case has been registered at Khalra police station, and both accused are being questioned.

What happened in Tarn Taran?

According to police accounts reported by several outlets, a team acting on intelligence inputs received by Inspector Rupinderpal Singh of the district's Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) staff, and led by Khalra Station House Officer Dilbagh Singh, intercepted the two youths. India Today reported that a joint team of Tarn Taran CIA and the state's Counter Intelligence wing stopped them on a motorcycle at Marimegha village near the border.

Punjabi Jagran reported that the raid was carried out around 2 am. Police first detained one of the accused and, after recovering the grenades, arrested the second.

Who has been arrested?

One of the accused has been identified as Princepal Singh, a resident of Dhun village in Tarn Taran district. India Today reported that the other accused is a minor. Jugti is not naming the second accused because of that report.

Where did the grenades come from?

Police say preliminary investigation suggests the four grenades were dropped into Indian territory by drone from Pakistan. Investigators allege that Pakistan's intelligence agency, the ISI, was trying to stir violence in Punjab during the festive period, and Punjabi Jagran reported police as saying targets were allegedly being passed to foreign-based gangsters. These are police allegations; whether the accused are linked to any specific terror organisation is still under investigation.

Why does this matter for Punjab?

The arrests are the latest in a string of recoveries in Punjab's border belt. Days earlier, police in Amritsar intercepted a truck driver from Tarn Taran with an AK-47 and grenades (read our report). Over the summer, police also reported recovering IEDs and grenades in Amritsar, Jalandhar and Chandigarh in cases they linked to the banned Babbar Khalsa International (BKI).

With Dussehra and Diwali approaching, police have stepped up deployment at sensitive areas, religious places and crowded public spots, along with vehicle checks across the state.
