Where is Singhpura?

Singhpura is a village of Baba Bakala tehsil in Amritsar district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Rayya, about 13 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Tarsika community development block and is served by the Singh Pura gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037752, and it covers 110 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 556 people in Singhpura: 293 men and 263 women, living in 97 households, an average of about 5.7 people per household. Spread over its 110 hectares, the population density works out to about 505 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 898 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 59, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 250 people, about 45 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 75.45 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 81.78 per cent and women at 68.62 per cent. The census recorded 258 workers, about 46 per cent of the village. A further 93 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (14 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (82 hectares). About 14 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 97 cultivators and 76 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
