It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Muktsar, about 22 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Fazilka community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035024, and it covers 1,679 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 9,353 people in Arniwala Sheikh Subhan: 4,908 men and 4,445 women, living in 1,904 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 1,679 hectares, the population density works out to about 557 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 906 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 1,164, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 4,773 people, about 51 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 72.11 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 78.81 per cent and women at 64.8 per cent. The census recorded 3,400 workers, about 36 per cent of the village. Of the 3,011 main workers, the largest group, 1,247, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 1,177 other workers in trade, transport and services and 562 cultivators on their own land. Fazilka, the tehsil headquarters, and Fazilka town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Mulianwali, Mahuana, Bananwala and Jhotianwali.
