Where is Gangohar?

Gangohar is a village in Barnala tehsil of Barnala district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Barnala, about 25 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Mehal Kalan community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 040030, and it covers 389 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,756 people in Gangohar: 922 men and 834 women, living in 343 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 389 hectares, the population density works out to about 451 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 905 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 189, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 488 people, about 28 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 69.62 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 74.21 per cent and women at 64.62 per cent. The census recorded 567 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. A further 157 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (115 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (231 hectares). About 41 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. With 193 cultivators and 108 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Barnala, the tehsil headquarters, and Barnala town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel.
