Where is Sehjra?

Sehjra is a village of Barnala tehsil in Barnala district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Barnala, about 17 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Mehal Kalan community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 040013, and it covers 1,055 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 3,945 people in Sehjra: 2,087 men and 1,858 women, living in 759 households, an average of about 5.2 people per household. Spread over its 1,055 hectares, the population density works out to about 374 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 890 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 391, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,370 people, about 35 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 67.75 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 72.79 per cent and women at 62.11 per cent. The census recorded 1,187 workers, about 30 per cent of the village. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. With 426 cultivators and 234 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
