Where is Bhaini?

Bhaini is a village of Bathinda tehsil in Bathinda district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Bathinda, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nathana community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035714, and it covers 587 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 3,074 people in Bhaini: 1,659 men and 1,415 women, living in 552 households, an average of about 5.6 people per household. Spread over its 587 hectares, the population density works out to about 524 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 853 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 303, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,412 people, about 46 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 62.72 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 69.02 per cent and women at 55.44 per cent. The census recorded 1,353 workers, about 44 per cent of the village. Of the 930 main workers, the largest group, 457, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 367 agricultural labourers and 101 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 423 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (252 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (188 hectares). About 93 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 469 cultivators and 742 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
