Where is Kalian Sukha?

Kalian Sukha is a village in Bathinda tehsil of Bathinda district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Bathinda, about 14 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nathana community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035717, and it covers 2,358 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 4,410 people in Kalian Sukha: 2,340 men and 2,070 women, living in 802 households, an average of about 5.5 people per household. Spread over its 2,358 hectares, the population density works out to about 187 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 885 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 478, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,635 people, about 37 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 63.43 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 67.16 per cent and women at 59.25 per cent. The census recorded 1,482 workers, about 34 per cent of the village. Of the 1,345 main workers, the largest group, 616, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 364 agricultural labourers and 347 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 137 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Kalian Sukha's land. Of the village's 2,358 hectares, 2,230 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (1,095 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (1,135 hectares). About 128 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 4 hours a day. With 627 cultivators and 457 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Education in the village runs through one government primary school, one government middle school and one government secondary school, so children can study in the village up to Class 10. The village also had an anganwadi centre and an ASHA health worker.

Health facilities recorded inside the village in 2011 included a community health centre, a primary health centre, an allopathic hospital, a dispensary and a veterinary hospital. Treated tap water was available in the village. It also had mobile phone coverage. Banking was available in the village itself, with a commercial bank branch and a cooperative bank branch. Domestic electricity supply was recorded at 10 hours a day.

Bathinda, the tehsil headquarters, and Bathinda, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel.
