Caledon is a town in Peel Region, Ontario, Canada, directly north of Brampton, and the newest Punjabi frontier in the Greater Toronto Area. The 2021 census counted 10,865 Sikhs in Caledon, 14.3 per cent of the town, up from just 1,175 a decade earlier, and Punjabi was the mother tongue of 11.1 per cent of residents, second only to English. The growth is concentrated in the south, in Mayfield West and the new subdivisions along the Brampton border.

Where is Caledon, and why do Punjabis live there?

Caledon is the northernmost municipality in Peel Region, northwest of Brampton and part of the Greater Toronto Area. The 2021 census counted 76,581 people in the town, a rise of 15.2 per cent from 66,502 in 2016, making it one of the faster growing municipalities in Peel. With a land area of 688.82 square kilometres, Caledon is the largest municipality by area in the Greater Toronto Area, and most of it is still rural: farms, hamlets and villages such as Bolton, Caledon East, Alton, Belfountain and Cheltenham.

Punjabis live in Caledon for a Brampton reason. Families who wanted a new house, a bigger lot and a quieter street, but who work, shop and worship in the Punjabi world of Brampton, have moved a few streets north across Mayfield Road. The town was formed on 1 January 1974, but its Punjabi story is a story of the last twenty years, written by the subdivisions of the south. See Punjabi places in Canada for the surrounding cities.

Mayfield West, where Brampton spills into Caledon

Mayfield West, also called Southfields, is a suburban neighbourhood in the south of Caledon, immediately beside Brampton along Mayfield Road, with a population of about 14,800. For most of its history the area was rural farmland around the hamlet of Mayfield. In the early 2000s Mayfield West began to grow as spillover growth from Brampton, and it has become one of the largest communities in Caledon, with further suburban expansion planned along the Brampton boundary toward Bolton.

That spillover is visible in the town's southern schools, plazas and new streets, where Punjabi is heard daily and many households are first or second generation families from Brampton and Punjab itself. Bolton, with 26,795 people in 2021, remains Caledon's largest community and its administrative centre, but the demographic change is happening fastest in the south, closest to Brampton's gurdwaras, shops and trucking yards.

What do the census numbers say?

The 2021 census counted 10,865 Sikhs in Caledon, 14.28 per cent of the town, up from 1,175 Sikhs, 1.99 per cent, in 2011 and just 375 in 2001. In a single decade the Sikh population grew more than ninefold. South Asians overall numbered 16,310 in 2021, 21.44 per cent of the town, up from 6,635 in 2016 and 1,995 in 2011, and Indian was the third largest ethnic origin in the town, with 9,120 residents reporting it.

Language tells the same story. English is the mother tongue of 65.4 per cent of Caledon's residents, and Punjabi is next at 11.1 per cent, ahead of Italian at 5.4 per cent, which reflects both the town's older Italian Canadian community and how completely the new southern growth is Punjabi. Few Canadian municipalities have changed this fast: in 2011 all religions other than Christianity together made up 3.9 per cent of Caledon; by 2021 they made up 22.2 per cent.

A gurdwara on Mayfield Road

Caledon's own Sikh institution is young, like the community itself. Since 2022, the property at 6600 Mayfield Road, a red brick farmhouse built around 1860 to 1865 and known as the John C. Kerr House, has been owned and operated as a Sikh gurdwara by the Khalsa Gurmat Academy, with a worship hall, community kitchen and classes. A heritage report prepared for the town in 2024 records the gurdwara use and the academy's plans to continue operating the site as a place of worship and assembly.

For most Caledon families, though, daily Sikh life still runs south across Mayfield Road into Brampton, where some of the largest gurdwaras in Canada stand minutes away, and into Mississauga beyond it. That is the pattern of a frontier suburb: the houses arrive first, and the institutions follow as the community settles and grows.

A rural town becoming a suburb

Caledon took its name from Caledonia, the Roman name for Scotland, and its townships were settled in the early 1800s along the Credit and Humber rivers. The present town was created in 1974 by amalgamating Caledon Township with parts of Chinguacousy and Albion townships and the villages of Bolton and Caledon East. For decades it stayed a farming town of villages and hamlets, known for the Niagara Escarpment, the Forks of the Credit and the red hills of the Cheltenham Badlands.

The southern edge is now changing that character. Provincial growth plans point to much more housing along the Mayfield corridor and Highway 410, and each new phase brings more Punjabi families who see Caledon as Brampton with more space: the same language, food and faith community, on a larger lot, beside protected countryside.

Caledon's Punjabi community today

Today Caledon's Punjabis are largely homeowners in the new southern subdivisions, working in trucking, logistics, construction, health care and business across Peel, with children in the new schools of Mayfield West. Vaisakhi and Diwali are now part of the town's calendar, and Punjabi signage and food shops are appearing along the southern corridors. For a visitor, the essential stops are Mayfield West on the Brampton border, the Khalsa Gurmat Academy gurdwara at 6600 Mayfield Road, and the Cheltenham Badlands, the town's best known landscape. Caledon is one of the towns listed under Punjabi places in Canada.
