Where is Dhilwan?

Dhilwan is a village in Bagha Purana tehsil of Moga district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Bagha Purana, about 24 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Baghapurana community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 033954, and it covers 581 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,857 people in Dhilwan: 1,514 men and 1,343 women, living in 559 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 581 hectares, the population density works out to about 492 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 887 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 319, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 996 people, about 35 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 62.17 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 70.01 per cent and women at 53.35 per cent. The census recorded 806 workers, about 28 per cent of the village. Of the 711 main workers, the largest group, 280, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 279 agricultural labourers and 135 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 95 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (174 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (285 hectares). About 50 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 286 cultivators and 338 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
