Where is Khachran?

Khachran is a village of Jaito tehsil in Faridkot district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Jaito, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Kot Kapura community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035611, and it covers 560 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,501 people in Khachran: 829 men and 672 women, living in 295 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 560 hectares, the population density works out to about 268 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 811 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 159, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 834 people, about 56 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 64.61 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 72.29 per cent and women at 55.46 per cent. The census recorded 516 workers, about 34 per cent of the village. Of the 264 main workers, the largest group, 171, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 48 other workers in trade, transport and services and 40 agricultural labourers. A further 252 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Khachran's land. Of the village's 560 hectares, 523 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (523 hectares). About 37 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 5 hours a day. The census recorded 178 cultivators and 281 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
