Where is Dedahran?

Dedahran is a village in Bassi Pathana tehsil of Fatehgarh Sahib district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Bassi Pathana, about 3 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Bassi Pathana community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 032584, and it covers 119 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 515 people in Dedahran: 266 men and 249 women, living in 97 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 119 hectares, the population density works out to about 433 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 936 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 60, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 332 people, about 64 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 83.74 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 89.45 per cent and women at 77.52 per cent. The census recorded 221 workers, about 43 per cent of the village. Of the 121 main workers, the largest group, 62, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 29 cultivators on their own land and 17 agricultural labourers. A further 100 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Dedahran's land. Of the village's 119 hectares, 107 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (9 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (98 hectares). About 12 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 10 hours a day. With 37 cultivators and 37 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
