Where is Kotli?

Kotli is a village in Amloh tehsil of Fatehgarh Sahib district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Amloh, about 18 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Amloh community development block and is served by the Kotali gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 032828, and it covers 66 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 302 people in Kotli: 162 men and 140 women, living in 56 households, an average of about 5.4 people per household. Spread over its 66 hectares, the population density works out to about 458 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 864 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 36, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 97 people, about 32 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 74.06 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 77.14 per cent and women at 70.63 per cent. The census recorded 87 workers, about 29 per cent of the village. Of the 84 main workers, the largest group, 44, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 29 other workers in trade, transport and services and 11 agricultural labourers. A further 3 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Kotli's land. Of the village's 66 hectares, 25 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 23 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (23 hectares). About 41 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 46 cultivators and 11 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Amloh, the tehsil headquarters, and Fatehgarh Sahib, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Paheri, Raipur Chobdaran, Kapurgarh and Tanda Badha Kalan.
