Where is Jalalabad Rural?
Jalalabad Rural is a village in name and a small town in almost everything else: the census village that wraps around Jalalabad town in Fazilka district of Punjab, India, in the Malwa region of the state, close to the Pakistan border. The town of Jalalabad, the tehsil headquarters, stands about 4 kilometres away at the ring's centre, and the village's own settlements, a ring of bastis and chaks, spread over 1,923 hectares. The unit is run not by one panchayat but by twelve gram panchayats, among them Baluana, Tiwana, Kamre Wala, Fangian and Ghumani Wala. In the census record it carries village code 034926, and the directory writes it as Jalalabad (R) (Part), the rural part of the Jalalabad settlement that lies outside the municipal limits.
The town it surrounds
The town at the ring's centre began as a capital. In the 1800s Qutubuddin Khan created the Mamdot nawabi, a small princely state in this corner of Punjab, and the Nawab of Mamdot founded Jalalabad as its capital, naming it after his son, Nawab Jalaluddin Khan. The town that grew from that court became one of the richer trading towns of the border belt, known today for its industrial area and for the rice mills on its outskirts whose produce is exported. In July 2026 the town was officially renamed Parshurampuri. The Jalalabad name travels further through the assembly constituency of the same name, and through the cricketer Shubman Gill, who was born at Chak Jaimal Singh Wala, a village of this tehsil near the town. The villages of the rural ring live in the town's orbit: its markets, mills, schools and offices are theirs too, a few minutes away.
A working ring, not a farming village
The census numbers show how town-like the ring is. Of the 3,733 main workers counted in 2011, 2,924, nearly four in five, were other workers in trade, transport and services, while only 417 were cultivators on their own land and 363 were agricultural labourers. Counting marginal workers as well, agricultural labourers (947) outnumber cultivators (451) by more than two to one: most hands here work for wages, in the town's mills, markets, transport and building trades, or on other people's fields. Barely 1,350 of the village's 1,923 hectares were sown, and 573 hectares, almost a third, were already under non-agricultural uses: streets, houses and works. Every sown hectare was irrigated, all of it by canals. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day.
Population and people
The 2011 census counted 12,870 people in Jalalabad Rural: 6,954 men and 5,916 women, living in 2,505 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. On 1,923 hectares that gives a density of about 669 people per square kilometre, more than double the usual village figure for the district. The sex ratio was 851 women for every 1,000 men, low even by Punjab standards. Children up to the age of six numbered 1,682, about 13 per cent of the village. The ring's most striking figure is its Scheduled Caste population: 9,119 people, about 71 per cent of the whole, an exceptionally high share for a village of this size. Literacy stood at 66.66 per cent, with men at 74.74 per cent and women at 57.28 per cent.
Religious places
No shrine inside the rural ring carries a documented history of wider fame, and this page does not invent one. Worship is local and neighbourhood by neighbourhood: each basti and chak keeps its own gurdwara or temple for daily prayer, and for the town's larger shrines and festivals the ring looks to Jalalabad town, a few minutes away.
Schools, health and services
Education inside the ring runs through one government primary school, one government middle school, one government secondary school and one government senior secondary school, so children can study up to Class 12 without leaving the unit, and the town's schools stand just beyond it. The village had an anganwadi centre and an ASHA health worker. Health care itself sits in the town: the 2011 Village Directory recorded no health facility inside the rural unit, no hospital, health centre or sub-centre, but all of them within five kilometres in Jalalabad. The same pattern holds for money and mail: no bank branch or ATM stood inside the ring in 2011, and the nearest post office was within five kilometres in town, while the village itself had a PDS ration shop and mobile phone coverage. Drinking water came from untreated tap water supplies. Domestic electricity supply was recorded at 18 hours a day.
Getting there
Jalalabad Rural is reached by pucca, all-weather roads, and the 2011 directory recorded a private bus service inside the unit. Jalalabad town, about 4 kilometres away, is the tehsil headquarters and has the nearest railway station, within five kilometres; Fazilka, the district headquarters, is the other practical hub for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Chak Sohna Sandar, Chak Paniwala, Ladhuwala Hithar and Chak Maujdinwala.
Is Jalalabad Rural the same as Jalalabad town?
No. Jalalabad town is a municipal council, the urban settlement at the centre. Jalalabad Rural is the separate census village around it: 12,870 people in twelve gram panchayats of bastis and chaks, spread over 1,923 hectares. The two share a name, a market and a railway station, but they are administered separately.
