Where is Odian?

Odian is a village of Fazilka tehsil in Fazilka district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Fazilka, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Fazilka community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035125, and it covers 732 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,329 people in Odian: 720 men and 609 women, living in 255 households, an average of about 5.2 people per household. Spread over its 732 hectares, the population density works out to about 182 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 846 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 151, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 382 people, about 29 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 69.95 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 80.09 per cent and women at 57.96 per cent. The census recorded 441 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 410 main workers, the largest group, 197, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 176 agricultural labourers and 36 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 31 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Odian's land. Of the village's 732 hectares, 627 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (576 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (51 hectares). About 102 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. The census recorded 197 cultivators and 205 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
