Where is Usman Khera?

Usman Khera is a village in Abohar tehsil of Fazilka district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Abohar, about 20 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Khuian Sarwar community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035158, and it covers 1,572 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,558 people in Usman Khera: 1,376 men and 1,182 women, living in 487 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 1,572 hectares, the population density works out to about 163 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 859 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 352, about 14 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,178 people, about 46 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 63.01 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 71.05 per cent and women at 53.67 per cent. The census recorded 1,410 workers, about 55 per cent of the village. Of the 1,019 main workers, the largest group, 451, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 409 agricultural labourers and 156 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 391 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (1,346 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (47 hectares). About 82 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 610 cultivators and 566 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
