History

Abohar is an old city in Punjab's south-western corner, close to the Rajasthan border. Before Partition it was part of Ferozepur district; the Radcliffe Line turned it into a border city, and large numbers of refugees settled here.

In the late 20th century the Abohar region became Punjab's kinnow belt. Orchards around the city send kinnows across northern India, earning Abohar the title of Punjab's kinnow capital. On 27 July 2011, when Fazilka district was created, Abohar joined the new district as its largest city.

Geography & people

Abohar stands in the south of Fazilka district, a few kilometres from Rajasthan. The sandy soil suits kinnow orchards. The 2011 census counted 145,302 people, making it the biggest city of the district. Hindus form the majority, with Sikhs a large minority, and the Bishnoi community is prominent in the surrounding villages.

Places of interest

The Abohar Wildlife Sanctuary is known for its blackbucks, protected by the local Bishnoi community. The railway junction, the grain market and the kinnow orchards are the city's other draws.

Notable people

Abohar is known for its orchardists and traders; the Bishnoi community's devotion to wildlife is the area's distinctive identity.
