Where is Achhewala?

Achhewala is a village of Firozpur tehsil in Ferozepur district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Mallanwala Khass, about 11 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Ghall Khurd community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 034566, and it covers 217 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 585 people in Achhewala: 302 men and 283 women, living in 112 households, an average of about 5.2 people per household. Spread over its 217 hectares, the population density works out to about 270 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 937 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 59, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 272 people, about 46 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 63.69 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 70.8 per cent and women at 55.95 per cent. The census recorded 259 workers, about 44 per cent of the village. Of the 108 main workers, the largest group, 70, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 18 agricultural labourers and 17 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 151 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Achhewala's land. Of the village's 217 hectares, 193 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (193 hectares). About 24 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. The census recorded 72 cultivators and 128 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Firozpur, the tehsil headquarters, and Ferozepur town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Gulamwala, Dholewala, Ilmewala and Ghugatewala.
