Where is Lohgarh?

Lohgarh is a village of Firozpur tehsil in Ferozepur district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Mallanwala Khass, about 13 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Ghall Khurd community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 034501, and it covers 657 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,966 people in Lohgarh: 1,053 men and 913 women, living in 359 households, an average of about 5.5 people per household. Spread over its 657 hectares, the population density works out to about 299 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 867 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 195, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 715 people, about 36 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 72.11 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 77.3 per cent and women at 66.31 per cent. The census recorded 604 workers, about 31 per cent of the village. Of the 585 main workers, the largest group, 253, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 188 cultivators on their own land and 136 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 19 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (183 hectares). About 57 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. Firozpur, the tehsil headquarters, and Ferozepur town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel.
