Where is Ghumnewal?

Ghumnewal is a village of Jagraon tehsil in Ludhiana district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Mullanpur Dakha, about 4 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Sidhwan Bet community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 033815, and it covers 117 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 830 people in Ghumnewal: 432 men and 398 women, living in 139 households, an average of about 6.0 people per household. Spread over its 117 hectares, the population density works out to about 709 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 921 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 93, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 717 people, about 86 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 82.5 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 86.35 per cent and women at 78.37 per cent. The census recorded 230 workers, about 28 per cent of the village. Of the 211 main workers, the largest group, 108, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 61 agricultural labourers and 42 cultivators on their own land. A further 19 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
