Where is Gidranwali?

Gidranwali is a village in Abohar tehsil of Fazilka district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Abohar, about 13 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Khuian Sarwar community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035153, and it covers 1,354 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 3,244 people in Gidranwali: 1,705 men and 1,539 women, living in 646 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 1,354 hectares, the population density works out to about 240 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 903 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 450, about 14 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,592 people, about 49 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 63.53 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 71.52 per cent and women at 54.74 per cent. The census recorded 1,596 workers, about 49 per cent of the village. Of the 1,085 main workers, the largest group, 529, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 289 cultivators on their own land and 253 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 511 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Gidranwali's land. Of the village's 1,354 hectares, 1,269 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 1,239 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (1,239 hectares). About 82 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 13 hours a day. The census recorded 309 cultivators and 942 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Schools and facilities

Education in the village runs through one government primary school, one government middle school and one government secondary school, so children can study in the village up to Class 10. The village also had an anganwadi centre and an ASHA health worker.

The directory recorded Abohar, about 13 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was more than ten kilometres away. Abohar, the tehsil headquarters, and Fazilka town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Panjawa, Maujgarh, Diwan Khera and Tutwala.
