Where is Alawalwala?

Alawalwala is a village in Dera Baba Nanak tehsil of Gurdaspur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Dera Baba Nanak, about 16 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Fatehgarh Churian community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 028949, and it covers 113 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 427 people in Alawalwala: 231 men and 196 women, living in 83 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 113 hectares, the population density works out to about 378 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 848 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 35, about 8 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 18 people, about 4 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 89.29 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 94.34 per cent and women at 83.33 per cent. The census recorded 154 workers, about 36 per cent of the village. Of the 137 main workers, the largest group, 103, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 27 other workers in trade, transport and services and 6 agricultural labourers. A further 17 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (7 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (91 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 104 cultivators and 10 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
